This project will replace the existing two-lane bridge over the Maury River along Route 39 (Maury River Road) in Rockbridge County. The intersection of Route 39 and Route 602 (Turkey Hill Road) will be relocated to the west to improve sight distance and turning radius.
The new bridge will have two 11-foot travel lanes and a minimum five-foot shoulder on both sides. It will be built in stages at approximately the same location, with a slight realignment to the south to allow for a wider structure with shoulders. One lane of traffic will remain open during construction and will be controlled by a temporary signal.
The average traffic volume at this location was 880 vehicles per day in 2009. In the year 2038 traffic is projected to be 1,300 vehicles per day.
The total estimated cost for this project is $7,005,748, including $997,007 for preliminary engineering, $507,590 for right of way and $5,501,151 for construction.
Benefits
The existing two-lane bridge will be replaced by a wider bridge with two lanes of travel and wider shoulders. The intersection of Route 39 and Route 602 will be realigned to improve sight distance and allow a safer turning radius.
