This project is located in Frederick County on the county line with Shenandoah County. The project replaces the Cedar Creek Bridge, located on Route 623 (Fromans Road) southwest of Stephens City.
The existing 10-foot wide single lane bridge was built in 1932 and has reached the end of its service life. The bridge is currently posted for a vehicle 10-ton weight limit.
The new bridge will have two 10-foot lanes with five-foot shoulders. The new bridge will be constructed in the same location as the current structure.
Construction began in spring 2020 and should be complete in late spring 2021. During construction Route 623 is closed to through traffic. A detour utilizes Route 606 (Gap Road), which was upgraded from a graveled roadway to a hard surface roadway prior to bridge construction.
In 2014 Route 623 had an average daily traffic count of 370 vehicles per day. By design year 2028 the estimated average daily traffic volume is 731 vehicles per day.
The total estimated cost of the project is $2,179,582.00.
Benefits
This project will improve safety on Route 623 in Frederick County by replacing a single-lane bridge at the end of its service life with a new two-lane structure.
