Cost and schedule ►
Traffic alerts ►
This project will replace the structurally-deficient Denbigh Boulevard Bridge over Interstate 64 and CSX Railway between Warwick Boulevard and Jefferson Avenue in Newport News with a new bridge that meets current geometric and design standards.
The project includes demolition of the existing bridge, and construction a new bridge with four 12-foot lanes, a 16-foot raised median and two 8.5-foot sidewalks, as well as new roadway approaches and stormwater management facilities.
The demolition and construction is being completed in two stages to maintain one lane of traffic in each direction on Denbigh Boulevard throughout construction. In the first stage, traffic has been shifted to one lane in each direction on the existing bridge, while demolition work and construction of the new bridge, roadway, retaining wall and stormwater pond are underway. In the second stage, traffic will be shifted to the newly constructed portion of the bridge, allowing crews to complete the remaining demolition and construction work.
Traffic Impacts
Motorists will be advised of lane closures and traffic shifts that occur during the project, which is scheduled for completion in fall 2021. All construction work is dependent upon weather conditions.
Full Closure on Richneck Road (August 2019- Fall 2021)
During construction, a long-term closure with a signed detour remains in place on Richneck Road at the Denbigh Boulevard intersection to accommodate the lane reductions and reconstruction of the intersection at Richneck Road.
- As of August 6, 2019, access to and from Denbigh Boulevard to Richneck Road is currently prohibited for the remainder of the project (pictured below). Signed detours are in place directing Richneck Road and Denbigh Boulevard traffic to use Jefferson Avenue.
Full Overnight Closures on Denbigh Boulevard (~July 7-9 & July 11*)
- Starting as early as July 7, and estimated to continue July 8-9 and 11, Denbigh Boulevard will be closed between Millwood Drive and Pocahontas Drive starting as early as 9 p.m. until as late as 7 a.m., to allow for bridge beam setting operations. Signed detours will be in place directing Jefferson Avenue and Warwick Boulevard traffic to Bland Boulevard as an alternate route. *All work is weather-dependent. View Detour Map
