This project is being federally funded by the Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP), which seeks to improve safety and reduce highway crashes, and the fatalities and injuries that can result from them.
This project proposes to expand the Route 1 and Market Street intersection by providing triple left turn lanes from westbound Market Street to Route 1 southbound. A fourth lane on westbound Market Street at the intersection would be a shared through/right turn lane.
Sidewalk would be extended along westbound Market Street to provide a continuous pedestrian route between Route 1234 (Spotsylvania Avenue) and Route 1.
Improvements on Route 1 southbound would create an additional lane at the intersection that would function as a shared through/right turn lane, tying into the Interstate 95 northbound on ramp south of the intersection.
Sidewalks would be constructed in the area of improvement along Route 1 southbound and for a short area on Route 1 northbound at the intersection. Crosswalks would be built spanning Market Street and Route 1 at the intersection, controlled by pedestrian crossing signal equipment.
Proposed Design: Map Display (also pictured below)
