Be alert to lane closures and delays during morning and afternoon peak travel times.
The project to improve access along a section of Route 23 in the Gate City area of Scott County began September 2020. The project includes a Park and Ride lot at the intersection of Route 619, drainage improvements, installation of north and southbound left turn lanes at the intersection of Route 619, and the closing off of six of the nine crossovers along Route 23 to improve safety.
Be alert to delays during morning and afternoon rush hour due to a southbound Route 23 lane closure that will be in place 24/7 until crews move to work in the northbound lanes.
Project Phase One: a permanent right lane closure on Route 23 southbound to facilitate widening and to install a new drainage system.
Project Phase Two: a permanent northbound right lane closure will be in place on Route 23 while improvements at the Route 619 (Filter Plant Road) intersection is underway, as well as construction of a Park and Ride lot.
Project Phase Three: Closure of the passing lane in each direction to reconstruct the new median.
Project Phase Four: Temporary lane closures due to paving.
The project will improve safety along one of southwest Virginia's busiest highways. Six crossovers along this section of Route 23 that had no turn lanes were closed in October 2018 in an effort to improve safety, using temporary traffic control measures. Since closing the crossovers in 2018, accidents have decreased by over 90%. This project will make the crossover closures permanent by installing a concrete median.
