Motorists in central, eastern Virginia encouraged to stay off roads during snow removal efforts

RICHMOND, Virginia – Snow and high winds have created dangerous travel conditions in some areas of Virginia. Roads in central and eastern Virginia currently range from having isolated patches of snow or slush to being snow-covered. Motorists are encouraged to continue to stay off roads in areas affected by the storm to allow the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) room to clear snow.

Though the storm is moving to the northeast and out of the commonwealth, snow will continue to fall in some areas through the afternoon today. In addition, high winds are expected to persist throughout the evening, and at times on Friday. Blowing snow has created significant issues and will continue to reduce visibility to less than a quarter mile at times in some areas.

Crews will continue around the clock operations as needed to plow and treat roads. However, due to the forecasted low temperatures, roads may refreeze during the evening and overnight hours creating icy travel conditions.

Current road conditions are available at http://www.511virginia.org/, through the free mobile app or by phone. You can track the location of most snow plows at VDOT’s Snow Plow Tracker.

If you must travel, make preparations before you go. With temperatures expected to remain below freezing through the weekend, make sure your emergency winter driving kit is properly stocked and includes items to keep you warm. Allow extra time for the trip, drive at a low speed and stay at a safe distance from other vehicles. If you encounter slow-moving equipment such as snow plows, slow down and give them the right of way.

Note: VDOT clears all state-maintained roads. Incorporated cities and towns clear their own streets, as do Arlington and Henrico counties.
